National Endangered Species Day is observed on the third Friday of May every year. This day is celebrated to highlight the increasing need to protect endangered species across the world. The National Endangered Species Day initiative was introduced in 2006. National Endangered Species Day 2021 is being commemorated on May 21.

The National Endangered Species Act accentuates the efforts made to preserve the natural habitat of the animals. A huge range of species are facing the threat of extinction; while some fall under the category of critically endangered and others have already been extinct.

On this day, thousands of people from across the world participate by celebrating, and taking action to protect threatened and endangered species. Special programs are held at wildlife refuges, zoos, aquariums, gardens, schools, libraries, museums, community groups.

 INTERNAL DAY FOR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY

This International Day is part of the year 2021 defined as a super year for biodiversity with major events planned (and for most postponed to a later date) such as the IUCN World Conservation Congress, the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) of the Convention on Biological Diversity or the UN Biodiversity Forum.

The theme of the 2021 International Day for Biological Diversity is “We’re part of the solution”

UNESCO’s intersectoral strategy for biodiversity is based on 3 pillars: restore the relationship between humans and nature and regenerate ecosystems; conserve the harmony of our ecosystems; and amplify the power of youth. The backbone of this strategy are UNESCO designated sites (1,121 World Heritage sites, 714 Biosphere Reserves and 161 Global Geoparks) that cover 6% of the Earth’s landmass and are key areas where people learn to live in harmony with other living species and experiences are shared for the benefit of all.
The International Day for Biological Diversity (or World Biodiversity Day) is a United Nations–sanctioned international day for the promotion of biodiversity issues. It is currently held on May 22.[1]
